Cauvery and Narmada: at the holy confluence for the salvation of the righteous

Sadaiva Mandhatatrapure Vasantam ,Omkaramisham Shivayekamide ||

Meaning:- At the holy confluence of the rivers Kaveri and Narmada, the self-manifested Shri Omkareshwar, who always resides in the city of Mandhata, is the Jyotirlinga.           Composed by Adi Shankaracharya

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva is located on the banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, 77 kilometres from Indore and 13 kilometres from Mortakka. The Narmada River splits here, forming the island of Mandhata or Shivpuri. This island is approximately 4 km long and 2 km wide. The shape of this island is similar to the visual representation of Om or Omkar.

According to the Puranas, Vindhya mountain worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Parthiv Linga and performed penance, after which Lord Shiva appeared, blessed him, and incarnated as Pranav Linga. It was divided, and one section was named Omkareshwar, while the other was named Mamleshwar. Jyoti Linga is said to be in Omkareshwar, and Parthiv Linga is said to be in Amareshwar/Mamleshwar. Another legend has it that King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty did severe penance here, after which Lord Shiva blessed him and appeared here, and the Lord has sat in the form of Omkareshwar ever since.

The main temple of Omkareshwar is made of North Indian architecture with high spire. This temple is the main draw for visitors. There is no reliable information about the temple's construction. It is mysterious who created it or when it was created. The temple's sanctum sanctorum resembles a small temple built in the old construction style, with a dome built by accumulating layers of stone.Because this small temple is built on the south side very close to the straight deep bank of the river at a height and the large part of the north side appears to be built in the new construction style, neither the sanctum sanctorum nor the main deity is directly in front of the main gate. They are also not located directly beneath the new building's spire.

The temple has a massive assembly hall that is 14 feet high and supported by 60 massive pillars. The temple has five floors in total, with different deities installed on each. From bottom to top, the deities are Shri Omkareshwar, Shri Mahakaleshwar, Shri Siddhnath, Shri Gupteshwar, and Dhwajadhari Shikhar.

Devotees in Omkareshwar circumambulate Lord Omkareshwar and Mandhata mountain by taking Narmada water to fulfill their wishes. It is a circumambulation of about 7 kilometers. Many temples and monuments of archeological importance come in the circumambulation path where there is a rule to visit. Some of these are as follows

Narmada river

Narmada, also known as Reva or Mekal Kanya, is a river in India. It is the largest river in central India and the fifth largest river in India. It is the third largest river in India, after the Ganga and the Godavari. It flows west for 1312 kilometres as the traditional dividing line between North and South India, eventually ending in the Gulf of Khambat in the Arabian Sea, 30 kilometres west of Bharuch in Gujarat.

It is one of India's three largest rivers that flow from east to west, the other two being the Tapti and the Mahi. This is the only river in the valley between the Satpura and Vindhya mountain ranges that flows westward. It flows 1077 kilometres in Madhya Pradesh, 35 kilometres in Maharashtra, 39 kilometres on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, 161 kilometres on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, and 161 kilometres in Gujarat.

Naramada watchful importance

Narmada is one of India's five most sacred rivers, along with the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, and Kaveri. And it is believed that taking a bath in any of these cleanses one of all sins. According to the Puranas, the river Ganga had become polluted due to the bathing of crores of people, so she took the form of a black cow and came to bathe in the holy water of the Narmada river to purify herself.

The Narmada river is also said to be older than the Ganges river, according to the Puranas. The fact that the Narmada River is the only one that is circumambulated demonstrates its sanctity and greatness. Narmada Parikrama is regarded as the most difficult, difficult, and pious pilgrimage of all. Sadhus, saints, and pilgrims begin their padayatra in Bharuch and walk along the river to its source in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh, before returning to Bharuch in the opposite direction. This is a total distance of 2600 kilometres. Shri Omkareshwar is the only Jyotirlinga on this path.

Narmada at okareshwar

Every evening, devotees and priests perform Narmada ji aarti in Omkareshwar and light lamps in the river, which is known as Deepdaan. On Narmada Jayanti and other festivals, this work is done on a large scale. The Narmada River splits here, forming an island known as Vaiduryamani Parvat in Puranas and home to Omkareshwar Jyotirling. The Kaveri river is thought to be located to the north of this island. Which is broad and shallow, and Narmada, which is narrow and deep.

Sangam

Omkareshwar is the site of the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers. Both rivers flow around Mandhata Island and come together here. The temple is on the left when looking at it from the main city. Sangam is sacred because it is the confluence of two rivers.

Devotees go to the Sangam on foot or by boat, it also falls in the parikrama path. It is believed that bathing in the Sangam cleanses one of all sins.
